How to Connect Remote Desktop in Windows 10 or 8.1 or 7

To enable remote desktop connection in Windows 10, you need to make few changes to settings. This is in-built in the OS itself.

You need not install any paid third-party software. The RDP (remote desktop protocol) software comes in-built in Windows 10 or 8.1 or 7. It’s free to use, once you buy a genuine license of Pro or Enterprise edition.

You need to give permission to the remote person or support guy to access your computer.  By just turning on the switch “Enable Remote Desktop“, you can make your desktop accessible to remote user.

This is little different with Control Panel in Windows 7.  To use RDP, you should be connected to a network like LAN, WLAN, Wired Network, Wireless, Office Network etc.

Once you activate the remote desktop, you need to make few changes to remote settings in Windows 10/8.1/7.

How to Connect a Remote PC over the Internet?

In the earlier post, we have seen on how to use RDP over a local network .

But, suppose you are working in an office and want to connect to a home PC, you would probably use the Internet or WAN connection for remote access.

First make sure, Remote Desktop is not being blocked on the remote computer.

  • Next you need to configure your router, so that it knows the correct addresses of your computers.
  • For this you need the default gateway and WAN settings.
  • You can get them using the “ipconfig” tool or using properties of network connection or using any web service on the Internet.
  • Then you need to enable Port Forwarding using the Port 3389.
  • As each router has its own settings, you may need to take the help of the corresponding router manual to do it.

It is important to recognize that, if you are using Internet to connect to your remote PC on a regular basis, the external (WAN) IP address is likely to change from time to time.

To avoid the hassle of rediscovering the address every time, subscribe to a dynamic DNS service.

Many routers have an option for dynamic DNS. So look in your router manual and select one of the services supported by your router.

This YouTube video shows how to connect to remote PC using WAN or router settings. In this specific example, TP-LINK router is used for setting the options for remote desktop connection.

After completing the above steps, the connection to your remote client is the same as above.

You just have to open the “Remote Desktop Connection” and enter the external IP (WAN) of the client you want to connect. Then enter the credentials and you will have full access to the client PC.

How to Block Ads in System Apps of Redmi MIUI 10

Xiaomi like any other smartphone brand has pre-built apps like Security, Mi Video, Mi Cloud, Mi Browser, Mi Music, Mi Credit etc. Redmi Note 4 also has many of these apps. MIUI 10 is the latest version of the user interface framework sitting on the top of Android OS.

Though MIUI system is used to simplify the look and feel of Xiaomi phones, it still has some drawbacks. The main complaints from Redmi users is system apps show different notifications and Ads.

Android by default, does not block ads.

Why to Remove Ads in Mi Phones

This is unlike browsers, where you can install Ad Block extensions to prevent ads from showing.

It is very irritating for a normal user of Redmi phones, to see pop-up ads while doing important work.

For example, Mi Browser is the default browser for Redmi phones.

Lot of interstitial ads and inline display ads are shown while browsing. In the same way, Security app which is used to clean junk and boost memory also displays ads between notifications.

There is no one-general solution to remove ads in Xiaomi Redmi system apps. You have to follow the below recommendations for each app.

1. How to Remove Ads in Redmi Note 4

In general, you need to disable the “msa” app. This can be done by turning off the authorization and revocation setting for “msa” app. Xiaomi made sure that it doesn’t work out easily. In MIUI 9, it was easy with 4 or 5 attempts.

But in MIUI 10, you have to make several attempts. You also need to wait 10 secs for each revoke attempt.

1. Your Redmi phone should be connected to Wi-Fi or Mobile Internet. This granted permission cannot be revoked without internet.
2. Settings > Additional Settings > Authorization & revocation > and set msa to Off.
3. Wait 10 secs to see the “Revoke” button.
4. Tap it and you may see “Couldn’t revoke authorization” for the first time.
5. This error is displayed 9 to 10 times, before it works out.

Note: In my case, I failed to revoke “msa” app even after trying several attempts. Not only this app, but granted authorization was not revoked for other apps like Mi Video, Feedback etc. This looks like a bug in MIUI 10 and later versions.

Even if this trick does not work out, you can follow the below multiple tweaks to block ads in system apps of your Redmi phone.

2. Privacy Settings to Block Personalized Ads

Go to this path – Settings > Additional Settings > Privacy

Under “User Experience Program” you can find the following options.
1. User Experience Program
2. Send diagnostic data automatically
3. Ad services

The first two options will prevent sharing of usage stats and personal data which can hinder your privacy.

If you tap the “Ad services” option, then you can see the following option.
1. Personalized ad recommendations
When the recommendations are off, you’ll still see the same quantity of ads as when it’s on, but they won’t be based on your behavior data or your personal information.

3. How to Block Ads from Mi File Manager in MIUI 10.2

The following steps will help remove the ads in File Manager.
1. Open Mi File Manager app.
2. Tap the three lines on the top left hand side.
3. Tap Settings > About

This app also shows ads. To remove them follow these steps.

1. Open Cleaner
2. Tap the brush icon the top right.
3. Tap gear icon on the top right.
4. Tap “Receive Recommendations” to turn off ads in this app.

5. How to Block Ads in Mi Video app in Redmi

1. Tap the app to open.
2. Tap Profile on the bottom right.
3. Tap Settings.
4. The following two options can be turned off.

  1. Online Recommendations – Turn off to stop receiving online video recommendations.
  2. Push Notifications – Turn off to stop receiving push notifications.

How to Block Ads from Mi Browser, Security and Mi Music apps.

These apps also show ads by default which is little annoying. More the ads, more you have to scroll through and more taps. To stop them just remove ad recommendations by following these steps.

1. Open Security app.
2. Tap on the gear icon at the top.
3. Tap Receive Recommendations to turn it off.
4. Ads will not show in Mi Security app.

Otherwise, you can follow a different method.

1. Open Settings > System Apps.
2. Tap the required app.
3. Tap Music for example.
4. Tap “Receive recommendations” to turn it off.
5. Tap Browser > Privacy & security.
6. The following options can be turned off.

Personalised services and Authorisation

This will prevent receiving personalised content recommendation and ads in Mi Browser.
You can also turn off the switch Authorisation on/off to grant or revoke authorisation for this app.

To completely remove ads from Mi Browser, you can try these settings.

Settings > System Apps > Browser > Advanced > Set start page.

You can enter a custom url here – like or This will remove the Xiaomi default page which has lot of recommendations and ads.

How to Block Spam Notifications in Redmi MIUI 10.2

You can go to – Settings > Notifications & status bar > App notifications.

It will take a few seconds to open.
Now scroll through the list of apps for which you want to disable spam notifications.

If you want to block all notifications, tap “Show notifications” to turn it off. But if you want to disable only promotional notifications for that app and get regular notifications, you can turn on/off the following settings here.

1. Priority – Show notifications at the top of the list.
2. Floating Notifications – Allow important notifications at top of the screen.
3. Lock Screen Notifications – Allow important notifications on the Lock screen.
4. Notification light.

The above settings will only help you prevent ads in some of the Mi apps which come pre-installed with the Xiaomi phone.

To block ads in general for all the apps in Play Store is not possible yet. I have tried rooting methods using “Ad Blocker” app, but it didn’t work as intended.

What is Tagging in Facebook and How it Works

This is one of the inherent features of Facebook.

Tagging is the process of adding yourself or your friend to a status update like a post, photo, video, comment, link, check-in, event etc. This can be done at the Facebook Page level also.

For example, when you share a video on your NewsFeed or Status, you can “tag” your friends who are included in the video.

This will create a profile link to that person or friend. Whenever somebody sees the status update, they can click on the friend’s name and see their profile.

What will happen when you “tag” Someone

Your status post may also appear on your friend’s timeline.

When you tag somebody, it will be visible in their notifications section. When you or your friend or someone tags anybody on a photo or post, it could be visible to the selected audience based upon your settings.

Tagging done by people who you are not friends with may also appear in your Timeline.

This depends on the review settings in your Facebook settings.

According to Facebook, you cannot stop somebody or anybody from tagging you. You can manually remove the tag or review the posts, media on which you are tagged.

How to Untag Yourself on Facebook – Desktop

The following steps will help you to untag yourself from videos, comments, photos, check-in, status etc you are already tagged in by your friends or others.

  • Login into Facebook. (Hint: Use your username and password).
  • Click the drop-down icon on the top blue menu bar.
  • Pop-up menu open and click on “Activity Log”.
  • On the left hand side under “Filters”, you can see “Posts you’re tagged in”.
  • You can see the list of items you are tagged in.
  • Scroll down to see the post, photo, video, event etc.
  • On the top right hand side corner, click the “pencil” icon.
  • Click the label “Report/Remove tag”.
  • A pop-up with heading “Help us understand what’s happening” crops up.

The following options are available.

  1. Its annoying or not interesting.
  2. I don’t think it should be on Facebook.
  3. It’s a fake news story.
  4. It’s spam.
  • Choose your option and click “Continue”.
  • Click on “Remove tag”. Other options will show the person who tagged you.
  • You can block, unfollow, unfriend that person, if you like.
  • A tick mark is placed to show that tag is removed. Click “Done”.

You can also see the items you are tagged in under “Tag review”.

Depending upon the privacy settings, items that are tagged will be displayed for review. Below that you can see the “Timeline review”.

You will be able to see who tagged your posts, photos, videos, etc . The total number of “review items” under tagging are listed here. You can add them to your Timeline if you like.

Note: You can see your tagged posts under Notifications also. But they will be limited to a certain period.

Stop Tagging – Settings on Facebook – Desktop

How do I make sure that “Unknown” friends stop tagging me?

In 2019 also, Facebook is still allowing your friends to tag you on different kind of posts and media items. There is no option or setting to stop someone tagging you on Facebook.

The following steps will help to manually review the posts you are tagged  on any post, media, links, check-in etc.

  • Click the downward icon in your Facebook account, on the top blue men bar. (Hint: This will be the last option).
  • From the pop-up menu, click on “Settings”.
  • Left-hand side, you can see “Timeline and tagging”.
  • There are two options on the right-hand side.
  1. Tagging
  2. Review

The “Tagging” setting has the following options.

  1. Who can see posts that you’re tagged in on your timeline?

You can see an edit button. This will allow to set the audience who you want to see your tagged posts on your Timeline feature. There are lot of options here like – 1. Everyone 2. Friends of friends. 3. Friends. 4. Friends except 5. Specific Friends. 6. Only me 7. Custom etc.

2. When you’re tagged in a post, who do you want to add to the audience of the post if they can’t already see it?

Edit this option to set the audience. If some of your friends are not able to see your tagged posts, then this setting will make sure the intended audience can see the post.

The “Review” feature has the following options.

a. Review posts that you’re tagged in before the posts appear on your timeline? – Enabled or Disabled
b. Review what other people see on your timeline.
c. Review tags that people add to your posts before the tags appear on Facebook? – Enabled or Disabled.

The a. and c. options are useful to prevent tagged posts appearing in your Facebook Newsfeed or Timeline.

When someone is not a friend and still tags you on a post, photo, video etc kind of items, you will be asked to review.

Once you approve the tag, the person tagged and his friends will be able to see your post you are tagged in.

Timeline review feature helps in to prevent items you are tagged in to automatically go to your Timeline.

When this option is enabled, you need to manually review your tagged posts, before they appear on your Timeline. This feature controls only what is allowed on your Timeline.

Note: Posts that you are tagged in by friends and their friends or someone who is not a friend, still appear in search, Newsfeed, and other places of Facebook.

How to Improve Download Speed in Google Chrome to Optimal Levels * 2019 *

There are different ways to download desktop apps using Google Chrome.

It has a default download manager which can manage your downloads.

Sometimes, the full potential of your download speed is not utilized by this in-built tool.

You can increase chrome download speed by using a download manager. It will optimize your bandwidth to the fullest extent.

How to Calculate Download and Upload Speed

For example, if you have a 8Mbps connection, your optimum download speed should be 1MBps. The small “b” stands for bit and big “B” for byte. As 8 bits make a byte, your (Internet Service Provider) ISP always provides the internet speed in bits. The equation will be something like this

actual download speed = ISP provided speed / 8

In other words you will get 0.125 times the maximum speed your ISP has mentioned.

On the internet, you see YouTube videos which promise 5x times the download speed which are false.

The bandwidth speed can never exceed the maximum limit provided by your ISP. Sometimes, you also have a throttle on your upload speed, just like your download speed. This depends on your ISP.

Read the below articles to improve speed of your laptop, internet explorer and kill processes to increase download speed of Chrome.

What about Google Chrome default download speed

If you don’t have any software or extension installed, Chrome’s default download manager kicks in. This will take over your downloads and saves in the default download location.

In the below screenshot, you can see a typical download taking place.

As you can see, for the same file, the download speed using Chrome is 168KB/s and transfer rate using download manager is 688.443 KB/sec.  It shows that you can definitely improve the download performance. Read on to know the various techniques to obtain the above result.

My connection is 6Mbps. I should be able to get a maximum or for that case, the optimum speed of 750KBps. But as you see, it is well below the par.

So if you have a 1Mbps connection, you should get 125KBps speed. But what happens if you use Chrome default download manager and options? You will not even get that speed.

Let’s calculate the time needed to download a file of size 75MB. For example, let’s take our ISP as 6Mbps itself (which is my connection speed). So it will download roughly 44MB in 1 minute. To complete downloading the file, it will take 103 seconds.

But what if your default Chrome manager is downloading at only 450KBps. Then it will download 26MB in 1 minute. It will take approximately 3 minutes to complete the file download.

In another case, if the download speed is only 125KBps, then it will download only 7.32MB in 1 minute. It means it takes approximately 11 minutes to download.

What if the download is 750MB instead of 75MB. The difference will be huge. The slower the speed, more time will be required to complete the download. If the file size is bigger, the time required will increase.

How to Check Google Chrome Download Speed

We have seen the correct way to calculate your download and upload speed.

But do you know what is your ISP internet speed?

To get an exact answer there are various speedcheck speed test tools. You will know how much bandwidth your internet provider is providing as per your package.

For example, if you have a 50 Mbps connection promised by your ISP, then you should be able to get speed of 5 to 6MBps. Most of the download managers display the rate at which they are downloading.

If you can compare the speed of your ISP using the tool as above and the speed in the download manager, you can cross-check your results.

Few Ways to Improve Chrome Page Loading Speed

The folowing are some ways to increase Chrome download speed.

1. Use Google DNS servers

1. Click the three dots on the top right hand side of your Chrome browser.
2. Select “Settings” and click on “Advanced“.

3. Under “Privacy and security” click on “Clear browsing data“.
4. On the next screen, click the button “Clear data“.
5. Make sure only Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, Cached images and files are selected. Select the time range to “All time” if it has been long, since, you used this option.

3. Click the “Remove” button beside any extension which impacts download speed.
4. You can also turn them off temporarily, using the toggle switch.
5. Most likely the culprits are heavily coded extensions which collect information or connect to the server.

Method #4

2. Help > About Google Chrome
3. Check whether the latest version of Google Chrome is running or not.
4. The latest version is 73.0.3683.103 as of April 2019.

The Best Way to Improve Google Download Speed Performance

Using any of the above methods takes some time. Also you need to periodically do maintenance jobs to apply the above tweaks. If you want to just forget about the mundane tasks mentioned above and install and forget, then you need to use a good download manager.

Read the below review about Internet Download Manager (IDM) in Windows 10.

This will automatically take up the downloads from your Chrome browser. It will give the maximum optimum speed for your file download. If you think, it is unnecessary and want to use the default download tool of Chrome, then also you can do it.

Just Press the Alt key and select the link, you want to use. The download is skipped by IDM.

Though there are different methods to take care of download speed of your Chrome browser, the download manager is the best option. Though the Pro version costs a bit, it can be used to download YouTube, Facebook and other social media videos, images, files and other downloads.

It is a multi-facet application which has many uses. Otherwise, you can following the remaining methods mentioned above, to use the default Chrome download manager. Those tweaks will also increase the download speed of Google Chrome.

If you still face Google Chrome slow issues, you need to update to the latest version. You can also try to uninstall and reinstal the browser to check for any hiccups. Clearing your profile and bookmarks and start to sync from first will also resolve the slow problem many-a-times.

How to Uninstall Apps in Windows 10 [Inbuilt or PreInstalled or Default]

Apps have been introduced in Windows 8 and 8.1. They are part and parcel of Windows 10 also. Many applications and programs have been converted to apps. Installation of apps can be done through Microsoft Store.

Once they are installed, you can terminate, reset and uninstall them in Windows 10. This feature is available using “Advanced Options” setting under each app. Even some programs or applications are also listed as apps in Windows 10.

To view all the apps in Windows 10 you can use the “Settings” feature.

Under this feature, the apps are put into different categories

1. Apps & features
2. Default apps
3. Offline apps
4. Apps for websites
5. Video playback
6. Startup

Most of the apps are listed under the first option. There are lot of in-built apps that come pre-installed during installation of Windows 10. Also when you update to the recent version like 1809, you have some more apps installed automatically.

Some of the standard apps are like – Alarms & Clock, Calculator, Camera, Mail and Calendar, Microsoft News, Microsoft Photos, Microsoft Store, Office, People, Snip & Sketch, Sticky Notes, Tips, Voice Recorder, Weather, Your Phone and many others.

How to Delete Apps in Windows 10

1. Press Win+I to go to Settings.
2. Apps > Apps & features
3. On the right-hand side, click on your app.
4. Then click on “Uninstall“.

It will remove the app or program. The functionality is the same for both app or old applications.

This feature is different from removing programs in Control Panel. If you have used Windows 7 or earlier OS, the setting is little different. Also apps are not listed under “Programs & Features” in it.

App permissions, Terminate, Reset

Once you select the app, below it there is an option called “Advanced options“. Click on it to see further settings.

For example, Mail and Calendar app have different options under this setting. You can see App permissions like Location, Contacts, Calendar, Email, Background apps. Some of these are apps by themselves.

By default some standard apps are granted permissions like Contacts, Calendar. For others, like, Location you have to give manually. At any time, you can disable or enable the permissions using the toggle on/off switch.

If you find any app is showing unwanted behavior like taking too much CPU % or RAM, giving too many notifications etc, you can terminate them in this screen.

Sometimes, the app may not work properly. This could happen due to new updates installed for the app. In that case, you can reset the app to default settings using this option.

How to UnInstall PreInstalled Apps in Windows 10

Once you install Windows 10, there are lot inbuilt apps. Most of them keep running as background processes.

Some take extra resources to display notifications, messages and warnings. Other apps are installed without your permission.

It can slow your PC, if these apps are increasing in number.

To delete or remove such apps you need a different approach. The tutorial mentioned above will not work in such type of default apps.

To UnInstall preinstalled apps, you can follow these steps.

1. Download CCleaner free version from
2. Open the app and go to Tools.
3. Then click on Uninstall
4. All the apps are listed here. (even preinstalled or inbuilt or default apps)
5. Right-click the app and click on “UnInstall“.

For example, if you take the Calendar app. This comes as an inbuilt app. The option to uninstall using “Apps” feature of “Settings” is disabled. But in CCleaner it is possible to delete it.

This feature of CCleaner is useful to delete apps which cannot be removed using the Windows 10 Settings feature.

How to Uninstall PreInstalled Apps in Windows 10 using Powershell

Windows 10 has lot of inbuilt apps like Maps, Groove Music, Calendar, Contacts, YourPhone, Xbox, Photos and many others. For these pre-installed apps, Windows 10 does not provide a direct way to uninstall them.

One of the methods is mentioned above. You can also remove them by using a simple Powershell command.

1. Create a system restore point before you apply these commands. Control Panel -> Recovery -> Configure System Restore -> System Protection tab -> Create. You can roll back the changes if anything does not work as intended.

2. Most of the preinstalled apps can be removed, except some mandatory apps. These include Cortana, Photos, Contact support, Edge browser etc.

Follow these steps to uninstall preinstalled apps using Powershell.

1. Press Win+X and then press A.
2. Type start powershell and press the Enter button.
3. Get a list of all the apps in your system using the following command.

Get-AppxPackage | ft Name, PackageFullName -AutoSize

5. Find the app you want to uninstall and note down the name of the app from “PackageFullName“.
6. Now paste the below command and press Enter to uninstall the app.

Get-AppxPackage *BingNews* | Remove-AppxPackage

In my case, I want to remove a Bing News app which seems like an unnecessary app for me.

But we can use wildcards (*) before and after the app name. So we need not know the full package name. Just make sure the part of the app name you are using is unique. Otherwise, you might be removing other apps also.

This feature is useful to delete existing apps of Windows 10 which cannot be removed. But as mentioned before, some apps are required for proper functioning of the OS.

You can also remove all pre-installed apps at once, using the following Powershell command for all users.

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage

The Powershell may show some red color errors. Don’t worry! These are just warnings for apps which cannot be uninstalled.

This video describes the normal way of deleting apps in Windows 10.

Final Thoughts

It is not advisable to remove all inbuilt apps in Windows 10. Some of them like Bing Weather could be useful for a better user experience. But certainly removing some apps which reduce the clutter in the Start Menu.

It looks more clean and easy to use. This will also reduce the load on the OS. In my experience, uninstalling preinstalled apps through CCleaner was much more easy than using Powershell.

Let me know in comments, which method you prefer to delete default apps.
