How to Improve Download Speed in Google Chrome to Optimal Levels * 2019 *

There are different ways to download desktop apps using Google Chrome. It has a default download manager which can manage your downloads. Sometimes, the full potential of your download speed is not utilized by this in-built tool of Chrome.

For example, if you have a 8Mbps connection, your optimum download speed should be 1MBps. The small “b” stands for bit and big “B” for byte. As 8 bits make a byte, your (Internet Service Provider) ISP always provides the internet speed in bits. The equation will be something like this

actual download speed = ISP provided speed / 8

In other words you will get 0.125 times the maximum speed your ISP has mentioned. On the internet, you see YouTube videos which promise 5x times the download speed which are false.

The bandwidth speed can never exceed the maximum limit provided by your ISP. Sometimes, you also have a throttle on your upload speed, just like your download speed. This depends on your ISP.

Read the below articles to improve speed of your laptop, internet explorer and kill processes to increase download speed of Chrome.

What about Google Chrome default download speed

If you don’t have any software or extension installed, Chrome’s default download manager kicks in. This will take over your downloads and saves in the default download location.

In the below screenshot, you can see a typical download taking place.

As you can see, for the same file, the download speed using Chrome is 168KB/s and transfer rate using download manager is 688.443 KB/sec.  It shows that you can definitely improve the download performance. Read on to know the various techniques to obtain the above result.

My connection is 6Mbps. I should be able to get a maximum or for that case, the optimum speed of 750KBps. But as you see, it is well below the par.

So if you have a 1Mbps connection, you should get 125KBps speed. But what happens if you use Chrome default download manager and options? You will not even get that speed.

Let’s calculate the time needed to download a file of size 75MB. For example, let’s take our ISP as 6Mbps itself (which is my connection speed). So it will download roughly 44MB in 1 minute. To complete downloading the file, it will take 103 seconds.

But what if your default Chrome manager is downloading at only 450KBps. Then it will download 26MB in 1 minute. It will take approximately 3 minutes to complete the file download.

In another case, if the download speed is only 125KBps, then it will download only 7.32MB in 1 minute. It means it takes approximately 11 minutes to download.

What if the download is 750MB instead of 75MB. The difference will be huge. The slower the speed, more time will be required to complete the download. If the file size is bigger, the time required will increase.

Few Ways to Improve Chrome Page Loading Speed

The folowing are some ways to increase Chrome download speed.

1. Use Google DNS servers
2. Disable Chrome extensions
3. Remove Unnecessary Chrome apps
4. Clear browsing history, cookies, temp files etc
5. Disable hardware acceleration.
6. Remove old bookmarks in Chrome Bookmark Manager
7. Update to the latest version
8. Kill memory occupying Chrome tasks
9. Enable network predictions.
10. Close unused tabs
11. Check your AntiVirus and Firewall
12. Remove bulky and third-party extensions

How to Increase Google Chrome Download Speed in 2019

Let’s see multiple methods in which we can decrease the slow speed of your Chrome in 2019.

Method #1

1. Click the three dots on the top right hand side of your Chrome browser.
2. Select “Settings” and click on “Advanced“.
3. Move the toggle switch “Use a prediction service to load pages more quickly” to on (it will turn blue color).
4. This will tell Google to download files and pages more quickly.

Method #2

Follow the first two steps above.
3. Under “Privacy and security” click on “Clear browsing data“.
4. On the next screen, click the button “Clear data“.
5. Make sure only Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, Cached images and files are selected. Select the time range to “All time” if it has been long, since, you used this option.
6. This will come under “Basic” tab at the top.

Method #3

Follow the first step above.
2. More tools > Extensions
3. Click the “Remove” button beside any extension which impacts download speed.
4. You can also turn them off temporarily, using the toggle switch.
5. Most likely the culprits are heavily coded extensions which collect information or connect to the server.

Method #4

2. Help > About Google Chrome
3. Check whether the latest version of Google Chrome is running or not.
4. The latest version is 73.0.3683.103 as of April 2019.

The Best Way to Improve Google Download Speed Performance

Using any of the above methods takes some time. Also you need to periodically do maintenance jobs to apply the above tweaks. If you want to just forget about the mundane tasks mentioned above and install and forget, then you need to use a good download manager.

Read the below review about Internet Download Manager (IDM) in Windows 10.

This will automatically take up the downloads from your Chrome browser. It will give the maximum optimum speed for your file download. If you think, it is unnecessary and want to use the default download tool of Chrome, then also you can do it.

Just Press the Alt key and select the link, you want to use. The download is skipped by IDM.

Conclusion

Though there are different methods to take care of download speed of your Chrome browser, the download manager is the best option. Though the Pro version costs a bit, it can be used to download YouTube, Facebook and other social media videos, images, files and other downloads.

It is a multi-facet application which has many uses. Otherwise, you can following the remaining methods mentioned above, to use the default Chrome download manager. Those tweaks will also increase the download speed of Google Chrome.

If you still face Google Chrome slow issues, you need to update to the latest version. You can also try to uninstall and reinstal the browser to check for any hiccups. Clearing your profile and bookmarks and start to sync from first will also resolve the slow problem many-a-times.

How to Uninstall Apps in Windows 10 [Inbuilt or PreInstalled or Default]

Apps have been introduced in Windows 8 and 8.1. They are part and parcel of Windows 10 also. Many applications and programs have been converted to apps. Installation of apps can be done through Microsoft Store.

Once they are installed, you can terminate, reset and uninstall them in Windows 10. This feature is available using “Advanced Options” setting under each app. Even some programs or applications are also listed as apps in Windows 10.

To view all the apps in Windows 10 you can use the “Settings” feature.

Under this feature, the apps are put into different categories

1. Apps & features
2. Default apps
3. Offline apps
4. Apps for websites
5. Video playback
6. Startup

Most of the apps are listed under the first option. There are lot of in-built apps that come pre-installed during installation of Windows 10. Also when you update to the recent version like 1809, you have some more apps installed automatically.

Some of the standard apps are like – Alarms & Clock, Calculator, Camera, Mail and Calendar, Microsoft News, Microsoft Photos, Microsoft Store, Office, People, Snip & Sketch, Sticky Notes, Tips, Voice Recorder, Weather, Your Phone and many others.

How to Delete Apps in Windows 10

1. Press Win+I to go to Settings.
2. Apps > Apps & features
3. On the right-hand side, click on your app.
4. Then click on “Uninstall“.

It will remove the app or program. The functionality is the same for both app or old applications.

This feature is different from removing programs in Control Panel. If you have used Windows 7 or earlier OS, the setting is little different. Also apps are not listed under “Programs & Features” in it.

App permissions, Terminate, Reset

Once you select the app, below it there is an option called “Advanced options“. Click on it to see further settings.

For example, Mail and Calendar app have different options under this setting. You can see App permissions like Location, Contacts, Calendar, Email, Background apps. Some of these are apps by themselves.

By default some standard apps are granted permissions like Contacts, Calendar. For others, like, Location you have to give manually. At any time, you can disable or enable the permissions using the toggle on/off switch.

If you find any app is showing unwanted behavior like taking too much CPU % or RAM, giving too many notifications etc, you can terminate them in this screen.

Sometimes, the app may not work properly. This could happen due to new updates installed for the app. In that case, you can reset the app to default settings using this option.

How to UnInstall PreInstalled Apps in Windows 10

Once you install Windows 10, there are lot inbuilt apps. Most of them keep running as background processes.

Some take extra resources to display notifications, messages and warnings. Other apps are installed without your permission.

It can slow your PC, if these apps are increasing in number.

To delete or remove such apps you need a different approach. The tutorial mentioned above will not work in such type of default apps.

To UnInstall preinstalled apps, you can follow these steps.

1. Download CCleaner free version from filehippo.com.
2. Open the app and go to Tools.
3. Then click on Uninstall
4. All the apps are listed here. (even preinstalled or inbuilt or default apps)
5. Right-click the app and click on “UnInstall“.

For example, if you take the Calendar app. This comes as an inbuilt app. The option to uninstall using “Apps” feature of “Settings” is disabled. But in CCleaner it is possible to delete it.

This feature of CCleaner is useful to delete apps which cannot be removed using the Windows 10 Settings feature.

How to Uninstall PreInstalled Apps in Windows 10 using Powershell

Windows 10 has lot of inbuilt apps like Maps, Groove Music, Calendar, Contacts, YourPhone, Xbox, Photos and many others. For these pre-installed apps, Windows 10 does not provide a direct way to uninstall them.

One of the methods is mentioned above. You can also remove them by using a simple Powershell command.

Note:

1. Create a system restore point before you apply these commands. Control Panel -> Recovery -> Configure System Restore -> System Protection tab -> Create. You can roll back the changes if anything does not work as intended.

2. Most of the preinstalled apps can be removed, except some mandatory apps. These include Cortana, Photos, Contact support, Edge browser etc.

Follow these steps to uninstall preinstalled apps using Powershell.

1. Press Win+X and then press A.
2. Type start powershell and press the Enter button.
3. Get a list of all the apps in your system using the following command.

Get-AppxPackage | ft Name, PackageFullName -AutoSize

4. This will display the list apps along with the short-name and full package name.

5. Find the app you want to uninstall and note down the name of the app from “PackageFullName“.
6. Now paste the below command and press Enter to uninstall the app.

Get-AppxPackage *BingNews* | Remove-AppxPackage

In my case, I want to remove a Bing News app which seems like an unnecessary app for me.

But we can use wildcards (*) before and after the app name. So we need not know the full package name. Just make sure the part of the app name you are using is unique. Otherwise, you might be removing other apps also.

This feature is useful to delete existing apps of Windows 10 which cannot be removed. But as mentioned before, some apps are required for proper functioning of the OS.

You can also remove all pre-installed apps at once, using the following Powershell command for all users.

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage

The Powershell may show some red color errors. Don’t worry! These are just warnings for apps which cannot be uninstalled.

This video describes the normal way of deleting apps in Windows 10.

Final Thoughts

It is not advisable to remove all inbuilt apps in Windows 10. Some of them like Bing Weather could be useful for a better user experience. But certainly removing some apps which reduce the clutter in the Start Menu.

It looks more clean and easy to use. This will also reduce the load on the OS. In my experience, uninstalling preinstalled apps through CCleaner was much more easy than using Powershell.

Let me know in comments, which method you prefer to delete default apps.

How to Speed Up Windows 10 PC using CCleaner Free version [2019 Tips]

In an earlier post, we have seen 25+ tips to improve Windows 10 speed. In this post we are going to see a different strategy for a fast PC.

Updates to Windows 10 close security vulnerabilities. At the same time, they slow down the computer also in 2019.

Outdated software, bulky applications, startup items, browser plugins, big and corrupt files etc are some of the other reasons.

Since Microsoft releases patches to these security updates, the issues will be resolved after sometime. If your PC becomes slow, it will be very difficult to do normal operations.

These include typing documents, opening apps, clicking to next screen, moving from one app to another, cleaning virus, uploading to cloud drives, deleting files, copying and moving folders from external HDD to internal disk, opening photos and videos etc.

Did you observe brand new Windows 10 Installation

If you use a laptop or desktop which has come pre-installed with OEM manufacturer based Windows 10 OS, it will come with lot of bloatware. For example, freemium anti-virus like McAfee or Norton slow down your PC.

The problem is different with an assembled PC. You have the privilege to install any Windows OS. Also, it is less likely that unwanted software come pre-installed.

You can always download the latest version of Windows 10 from here. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

When you install using a reliable Windows 10 ISO image file, there is less tension of ransomware, virus, spyware, adware and malware.

Important Note: If you did not install any other software other than the OS itself, your PC should be running fast. It will be at blazing speed when you do any of the above operations I mentioned.
Though the speed of Windows 10 PC depends on various factors like processor, RAM, motherboard, L2 cache, graphics card, number of devices attached etc, you should see quick performance of your computer.
But how does the speed compare to when you have installed several applications, apps, software from wrong sources, bad display drivers, junk cleaners etc. Most of the times your Windows 10 PC slows down.

Most of the users attribute this to wrong Windows 10 OS design and contact Microsoft technical support for answers. Though it may be a technical issue, most-of-the-times, the cause is in your desktop itself.

Keeping aside hardware problems, we can resolve the software issues very easily.

In this post we are going to see a different tweak to improve Windows 10 PC speed.

How to Speed Up Windows 10 Computer using CCleaner

As I said before, the causes behind the speed of your desktop or laptop depends on many factors. But today we are going to talk about CCleaner Free version tools which will help in removing unnecessary software.

1. Update your software to the latest versions (only Pro)
2. Uninstall not required programs, apps
3. Disable Browser plugins
4. Analyze your Disk Space

Let’s see the above features in detail.

You can download the latest and genuine version of CCleaner from filehippo.com for Free. The latest version is 5.55.7108. Once installed, you can start the application.
Important Warning: Create a system restore point before you apply any of the operations below.

Though CCleaner is primarily used to clean junk files, privacy cookies and left-over registry items, it can also be used as Windows 10 performance tool. On the left hand-side, you can see “Tools”.

Once you click on it there are different options.

Software Updater

This will automatically scan your computer and find the programs installed on your computer. It will show in two tabs.
1. Programs to Update
2. Up-to-date Programs

The second list will show the applications which are already up-to-date. Their current version is also displayed.

In the first tab, you can see the programs which need a update. You can see the current version, new version and installation file size. Once you click “Update all” it will automatically update all software to the latest version.

How can this speed up your PC

As we have said already, Windows 10 releases updates from time to time. So, the software also has to be compatible with the new release. If they are old, there can be some issues between the system files and application code. This can take up resources and can hog the PC performance.

For example, Google Chrome has been lately updated. If you are still using the old version, you can have security problems. This in-turn can cause slowness of the PC.

Uninstall

A list of apps and programs installed on your Windows 10 computer are displayed here. The advantage of this tool over “Programs and Features” in Control Panel is that, even apps are also listed here. Though you can uninstall apps manually, all of them do not appear as here.

It is very good for the user look and easy to uninstall the programs and apps.

How can this improve speed

As we said before, too many apps and programs may clutter your OS. Even if your hardware is good enough, a couple of apps or programs can take lot of resources of your computer.

If that app or program is completely necessary, then you have to troubleshoot it individually. But if you think it is unnecessary, you can remove from here.

Startup

Using Task Manager in Windows 10, you can disable “start up” items. But in CCleaner Tool, you also see items which are not seen there.

For example, in my Windows 10 PC, I can see Adobe ARM, AdobeAAMUpdater, AdobeGCInvoker, NvBackend kind of processes starting up during boot.

If you can disable such items during startup it will improve boot speed and you can quickly gain access to your desktop.

This will also make sure that unnecessary parts of an important program don’t run during normal operations of your computer.

Browser Plugins

This is another important tool from CCleaner. When you install different extensions, add-ons for your browsers, lot of redundant plugins get added to them.

This will hinder the speed of your browser. As Chrome and Firefox are the main browsers, most people use, it is necessary you use only important plugins.

How can this Increase Windows 10 Speed

If you observe the Task Manager, the major CPU and RAM resource hog is your browser. The more number of tabs you have, the more amount of hardware usage takes place.

This will slow down other operations of your computer, as it cannot give enough CPU and RAM power to other apps and programs. So if you have a bad browser plugin, it will still slow down your computer and take lot of browser resources.

For example, in my computer, I found unnecessary browser add-ons like Microsoft SkyDrive Pro Browser Helper, Adobe Acrobat Create PDF Toolbar, PDF Helper etc. Once you disable it will give better speed to your computer.

Disk Analyzer

This tool will help find the big files on your computer. If your hard-disk is short on storage space, then you can delete unnecessary files and folders.

Also you can find any system, rogue and virus files, which can sometime take up space and resources also. This is basically to analyze your disk space.

Conclusion

As mentioned earlier, these CCleaner tools will aid in speed benefit of your Windows 10 computer. They cannot magically increase your system performance if your hardware or other settings are not correct.

These above tweaks should help in removing common problems faced for a slow PC. In addition to that, using the cleaning and registry cleaner of CCleaner can also remove temp files which can speed up your Windows 10 PC.

Like this: [Solved] How to Fix Error Code 8024402c in Windows 10 or 8.1 or 7 or Server 2012 or 2008?

Cause 1: Old BOOTMGR is being used

If there is a Windows 10 upgrade and you have updated your system. But Windows 7 or Vista boot loader is being used which has not been updated to the new version. Then error 0xc0000428 occurs.

Cause 2: Dual Boot System with old BOOTMGR

If you are using Windows 7 on one hard disk and you connected a new SSD. Then you installed Windows 10. This is a multi-boot system. But the boot loader is still the old one. So the new OS cannot detect the old BOOTMGR. This will halt the boot process. It is a software error.

Cause 3: Service Pack Problem

Just like in XP where SP2 and SP1 in Windows 7 are released, updates like 1709 or 1803 or 1809 updates are being released by Windows 10. The new Creators or October update will still being using the old version of the BOOTMGR. Since it is not updated to the level of the new upgrade, you can get this error.

Cause 4: BOOTMGR remaining on existing drive

Many people, as a safety precaution, disconnect the primary boot drive prior to installing Windows 10 on a new drive. This will cause the system boot loader on the main boot disk to outdated, while the new OS will try to find a new one. This conflict can also cause this error.

How to Fix “0xc0000428” on Windows 10

There are several ways to fix this problem.

Fix #1: Update BOOTMGR manually

The following are the commands that are to be executed to fix the error.

  1. Boot Windows 10 from installation DVD or USB. (You need to press the DEL or F12 or F2 keys to enter BIOS options. Then you need to make your installation disk (CD/DVD/USB) as your first boot device).
  2. After selecting language and keyboard layout, click on Next.
  3. Click on Repair your computer.
  4. Select the boot HDD and your Windows 10 installation drive.
  5. Choose “Command Prompt” under Advanced Options.
  6. Type the following commands.

First you can rebuild your boot manager using the following commands. Enter each command and you should get a successfully verified message.

bootrec /rebuildbcd
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot

Then you can restart the computer.

Note: Don’t forget to change the boot order to your active hard drive.

If the above commands fail saying that your OS partition is denied access, then enter the following command.

Bcdboot C:\Windows /s D:

Where C:\Windows is your Windows installation folder and D:\ is your active boot partition.

Generally, it is not required to update the MBR or apply the bootrec commands for this error code 0xc0000428. This is because, in most of the cases, BOOTMGR is correctly configured. Then you need to only apply the last command.

You can also follow this YouTube video which will show how to open Command Prompt window using Windows 10 installation media like CD or DVD or USB.  Then you can enter any boot commands to restore your boot files.

Fix #2: Change the Hard Disk Boot Priority

If you have multi-disk and multi-boot system, then there is a possibility to get this error.

For example, if you have HDD as DISK 0 and SSD as DISK 2, you need to make the correct drive as boot disk.

change hard disk priority to fix 0xc0000428

When you have Windows 10, 8.1 and 7 on different hard disk, it is important you always make DISK 0 as the boot disk. This causes less problems.

Always make the boot drive partition as the first disk to load using BIOS options. If you have multiple drives on your boot disk, make sure the first partition is where the BOOTMGR resides.

Fix #3: Use EasyBCD to Write MBR and Install BootLoader

As mentioned in the causes above, if you have updated your Windows 10 OS, the boot loader also has to be updated. Even when your HDD is disconnected to install a new OS, the old boot configuration data may not be compatible.

In many cases of dual boot or multi-boot system, it is better to rewrite the boot loader and MBR again to fix 0xc0000428 problems. For such cases, you can use a software called EasyBCD which creates the required boot files very easily.

Fix #4: Repair BOOTMGR Data

This works in many of the cases as reported on wintips.org. You have to apply a few commands to implement this solution.

  1. Boot your computer from the Windows 10 installation media like DVD or USB. You need to make necessary changes in the BIOS.
  2. Then select your language and keyboard layout and click on “Repair your computer“.
  3. In the Troubleshooting > Advanced Options > Command Prompt you have to type a few commands.

a. In command prompt give these commands:

  • diskpart
  • list volume

– Notice the Volume number of the System Rese (“System Reserved”) volume and the Driver Letter of the OS Volume. *

* The “System Rese” volume contains the Boot Manager and the Boot Configuration Data, it has the smallest size (e.g. 100MB, 350MB) of all volumes and if you use an UEFI based computer then the “System Reserved” is in Fat32 format (aka “EFI” volume).
** The OS volume is the partition where the Windows is installed and commonly is the largest volume in size (GB).

e.g. In this example:

The volume number of the “System Rese” Partition is “2”
The drive letter of the OS volume is “D”.

b. Select the System volume by typing this command: select volume 2

* Note: Replace the number “2”, according to your case.

c. Then give these commands:

  • assign letter=Z
  • exit

d. Finally type this command:

  • bcdboot D:\windows /s Z: /f ALL

* Note: Replace the letter “D”, according the drive letter of the OS volume in your case.

e. Restart your computer and try to boot in Windows normally. If Windows doesn’t boot, then follow the same steps, but at the end, type this command:

  • bcdboot D:\windows /s Z: /f UEFI

How to rectify Error “0xc0000428” if the above fail

You can use your “Windows Installation” disk or USB to repair your computer, if the boot fails. Then you can open Command Prompt and type the following commands one by one.

diskpart
list disk
select disk <#>
list partition
select partition <#>
active

This will make the OS partition active.

You can then use BCDBoot command-line tool, to configure the boot files on a PC or laptop to run Windows 10 or 8.1 or 7.

This is useful in the following 4 ways.

1. Add boot files to a PC after applying a new Windows image
2. Set up the PC to boot to a virtual hard disk (VHD) file that includes a Windows image.
3. Repair the system partition
4. Set up or repair the boot menu on a dual-boot PC.

BIOS:

  • BCDBoot copies the boot files to either the active partition on the primary hard drive, or the partition specified by the /s option.
  • BCDBoot creates the BCD store in the same partition.

Then apply the following command.

bcdboot C:\Windows /s S:

The following example copies BCD files from the C:\Windows folder to a system partition on a secondary hard drive that will be booted on another computer. The system partition on the secondary drive was assigned the volume letter S:

This is helpful when you have a dual-boot or multi-boot scenario. It works with all Windows OS. For example, of you are having Windows 10 and 7 on the same computer, then you can use the above commands.

Note: It may not work with Windows and Linux as a dual-boot scenario. This is because it is a DOS command line tool, which will work with Windows OS only.

If you get error code 0xc0000428 while booting on a dual-boot system, then the best bet would be to boot into one of the OS (like Windows 10 or Windows 7) first. Then using EasyBCD, you can later add the other OS.
In a dual-boot scenario, when you have both Windows 10 or 8.1 and Windows 7 on the same system, it is best to leave the default Metro BootLoader. I faced problems trying to install the Windows 7 or Vista boot loader.

My Experience in a Few Words …

I faced this issue, when I re-wrote the boot configuration data on my SSD disk. But this happened to be DISK 2 according to the disk management tool. I had 4 OS installed in my system. Only 2 of them were booting and error 0xc0000428 was displaying when I tried to boot into the other two.

But earlier I didn’t have any problem when I installed the boot loader on DISK 0 which was a 80 GB HDD. So I reverted the changes. Hoila! It worked simply. I did not even execute any commands.

It is always better to have a dual-boot system. Because, if you have problem with one OS, you can login into the other and make the necessary changes. If F8 works, then you can use the “Last Known Good Configuration” option and “Safe Mode with Command Prompt” to make necessary changes.
