HostGator hosting offers different services. It acts as a web space hosting provider to host your website. The two things you need to start a web site are – domain registration and hosting provider. Some people use the same company to do both the things while some prefer doing it with separate companies.

So whatever the choice you use, you are ready to go with your website. Now-a-days almost all domain service providers provide free domain email. You get professional email addresses with every domain you buy. Isn’t this a nice opportunity to brand your business or personal charisma on the Internet?

Coming to myself, I use HostGator as a hosting service provider and Name.com for domain registration. After buying the domain name, you need to enter Name-Servers details which will link-up your “Domain IP Address” to the hosting server.  This finalizes your website setup and you are ready to go.

Now you can install various templates and design your website as you like. You can also install blogging platforms like WordPress, Tumblr, Drupal etc and write content giving your opinions. With these facilities you can also get a personalized email address free of cost to share with your business clients or friends.

In this article we are going to see about HostGator email account setup and smtp, pop, imap settings for mail clients.

In this area, you can manage your email accounts associated with your domains. You need to fill some text-boxes with your preferred data like youremail@yourdomainname.com and password.

The domain name is already pre-populated beside Email text-box. There will be more than 1 domain names, if you have hosting different web-sites.

You also need to select the amount of disk-quota required for your domain email account. There are 2 choices in HostGator – A value for your disk-space on the hosting server and Unlimited.

Then click on “Create Account“. This should create your own domain email address.

The next important thing in this task of domain email management is “how to view email” ?

For this you require an email client like Windows Live Mail. Though with HostGator, you can read email with in-built services like Horde, RoundCube, SquirrelMail, there are advantages using popular email clients like Thunderbird, WLM and Outlook.

The domain’s MX records must be successfully connected to the HostGator server to receive and send email. It uses the same server to host the site and email. Then you can either use webmail or email client to access your mails.

POP and IMAP are different ways to send emails using HostGator email account server.

IMAP is useful for multiple users who want to use the same account or one user who needs access from multiple locations.

POP on the other hand is useful with Outlook and other email clients to download email and read them offline.

Here, you can see there are lot of auto-configuration script options for different email clients. Windows Live Mail is one. In the Protocols tab, there are different ways of connecting your private email with your mail client. I prefer the POP3 over SSL/TLS method. Just click that label and a small-screen pops-up.

As you can see the content of this pop-up, this script will automatically configure Windows Live Mail with the correct settings for POP3 over SSL/TLS. The other details can be read from the pop-up.  Click on the “Proceed” button.

This will download a small .vbs file which is nothing but a “VBScript Script file“. You can download to your computer and run it with administrator privileges. This will automatically configure your Windows Live Mail client.

Note : Your WLM (Windows Live Mail) need to be closed during the script operation.

Once this process is completed, WLM automatically opens up displaying any recent mail in the Inbox.
